Agora Gallery is delighted to announce the opening of the 25th annual Chelsea International Fine Art Competition. Entries can be sent in from February 4, 2010 until March 14, 2010 when the submission process closes.
The competition is open to all international visual artists of 18 and above. Emerging, established and mid-level artists are all invited to enter their work. A variety of media is accepted, with the exceptions of video art, film, performance art, jewelry and crafts.
This year, entry is only through the online entry system and requires contact information, details about the artwork, and, of course, images of the artwork itself. Please remember to submit high quality images – even the best work cannot be properly appreciated if the [...]
A new exhibition is coming to Agora Gallery next week. Starting on the 15th December and continuing until the 5th of January, The Odyssey Within showcases the work of contemporary Greek and Italian artists and brings their expressions of their own personal journeys to the heart of New York City.
Although the title is obviously reminiscent of the works of antiquity, it is clear that these modern-day artists are based firmly in the world around them, and bring their unique understandings of their personal and national surroundings to bear in their work. Wholly contemporary, the works yet maintain a connection to their European roots and present this aspect to us for our enjoyment and illumination.
The 22nd edition of ARTisSpectrum, the contemporary art magazine published biannually by Agora Gallery, went online today and will shortly reach galleries, collectors, art-lovers and consulates throughout New York.
As ever, one of the primary areas of interest in ARTisSpectrum is the profiles it contains of innovative and exciting emerging and mid-level artists, which can be of help to dealers, galleries and collectors internationally in keeping up to date with new and fresh talent. The work of the artists profiled covers a wide range of artistic styles, as is obvious from even a glance at the images which illustrate the descriptive text. It is also interesting to consider the different sources of inspiration which motivate and move different artists, and [...]
When people talk about an artist’s career and work, they tend to focus on the global exhibitions in which the artist took part, the galleries by whom they were represented, the awards won, perhaps the well known figures they’re associated with. All this is very natural, and indeed reasonable – all of this does tell us something important about the artist’s life and work. The sorts of exhibitions they were in, whether they showed their work internationally and in the centers of the art world, whether their appeal was broad or select, these things are relevant to an understanding of their career and may well give an insight into their art. Moreover they are matters of public record and general knowledge, and a natural part of any artist’s legacy. However, they are not the whole of it, and a focus on too small an area of importance risks obscuring other elements [...]
Take part in exploring and interpreting the messages so brilliantly expressed through the power of color; discover unbridled visionary painting; be confronted with poetic visual puzzles and graceful statements about the human subconscious; be touched long after viewing these stunning paintings.
Beginning July 21, Agora Gallery will host a collective exhibition of contemporary art consisting of four parts.
Literally reaching out into the abyss, Labyrinth of Color features artists as they approach the deepest regions of our real and imagined space. Radiant colors shine forth, as each artist travels into the unknown, bringing back surreal visions of our universe to share with their audiences.
A few weeks ago I read an article in the NY Times art section about the way artists – working in both visual and non-visual media – were reacting to the recession, how it was affecting them, how they felt about it, what they were planning to do, etc. I was interested but it didn’t make a huge impression on me – until I was redirected to it recently by a friend, and discovered that literally hundreds of artists had replied to this article with their comments. Their thoughts make fascinating reading, rather like a group effort journal entry that pinpoints and describes a moment in our time, as felt by artists.
Naturally, there are a number of entries talking about the added difficulties they face as a result of the recession. In particular, artists who were not yet established when it hit have found notable [...]
Agora Gallery’s biannual contemporary art magazine, ARTisSpectrum, was published online today, it will be hitting the newsstands within the next couple of weeks.
The latest edition includes profiles of emerging artists, as well as critiques of established ones, making it a good place to search for up and coming talent or catch sight of a fresh look that is heading to the world stage. Notable is ‘Etched in Light‘, a piece about artist Marty Maehr, whose beautiful creations place significant emphasis on color, producing an effect similar to stained glass windows.
There are also a number of feature articles. ‘For the People’is Bill Buschel’s expression, in a kind of graphic novel meets photo journal format, of the emotions and thoughts he [...]
