When people talk about an artist’s career and work, they tend to focus on the global exhibitions in which the artist took part, the galleries by whom they were represented, the awards won, perhaps the well known figures they’re associated with. All this is very natural, and indeed reasonable – all of this does tell us something important about the artist’s life and work. The sorts of exhibitions they were in, whether they showed their work internationally and in the centers of the art world, whether their appeal was broad or select, these things are relevant to an understanding of their career and may well give an insight into their art. Moreover they are matters of public record and general knowledge, and a natural part of any artist’s legacy. However, they are not the whole of it, and a focus on too small an area of importance risks obscuring other elements [...]
