Solo exhibition: L. Byrne
A new solo exhibition is coming to Gallery II this fall. Visitors will have the opportunity to view the engaging works of memorable artist L. Byrne. Opening on October 7, 2011 and continuing until October 28, 2011, the exhibit provides the chance for viewers to engage with a passionate response to the natural elements and landscapes that inspire this remarkable artist. The reception will take place on October 13, 2011. Entrance is free and all art enthusiasts are warmly invited to attend.

L. Byrne is inspired by her love of color, which she employs to great effect, using her instinctive understanding of its power to bring enormous emotional depth to her works, expressing her own feelings through the images she creates. She also finds freedom through her innovative and deliberate use of texture, which reflects the sense of the open spaces of the natural world which play such a key role in her motivation and background.
Moreover, there is a consistent, almost dramatic emphasis on movement and form in these paintings, so that the viewer feels almost as if they are facing a scene which has ceased moving just before they happened to look at it, and is now simply poised, taking a breath between moments full of kinetic energy.
The artist builds on a lifelong connection to nature, starting with the memories of her youth which are populated by the Canadian wilderness, long canoe trips and lingering campfires most memorable for being decorated by the Northern Lights. The environment has influenced her creative work all her life, especially in the colors and rugged textures she often chooses to use.

Moreover, time spent in the warmth of the Caribbean and the cold winds of the Canadian Rockies have imbued her with a strong feeling for contrasts and comparisons – themes that find life and expression in her art. She has also found inspiration in her strong family ties to Ireland, and contemplation of its natural environment and tumultuous history has made her sensitive to both beauty and tragedy.
At the beginning of her artistic career, L. Byrne concentrated on figurative work, painting people scenes with clearly defined boundaries and lines. However, reacting to a period of challenging family tragedy, she found that abstract art appealed to her more strongly. Since the way she thought about life had changed, her art had to develop as well. Her current style is a reflection of the fact that she is no longer able to see the world as simple or contained. The brilliant colors she employs, on the other hand, express a celebration of life that she thinks is fundamental to existence and to art.
Moving, complex and unforgettable, the art of L. Byrne combines richness with clarity of vision.
