Ruth Gilmore Langs: Paint
A new exhibition has arrived in Chelsea, with a reception to be held Thursday, December 03, 2009 6-8 PM. Ruth Gilmore Langs, an exciting contemporary artist from Michigan, is presenting her work in an exhibit simply entitled ‘Paint’ – the title bearing testimony to the artist’s absorption in and love of her chosen medium, as well as introducing a new audience to the lively and stimulating effect of her work.
Ruth Gilmore Langs lives in Ann Arbor, on an island in the Huron River. Nature is a recurring theme in her work, and it is easy to see that her studio, with its beautiful views of the continually changing river, provides her with a constant source of inspiration. The sense of the bounty and beauty of the natural world comes through strongly in her work, reminding her audience of the wonder that can be found by those who take the trouble to see.
The artist talks of the importance in her work of being ‘in the moment’, experiencing the ‘now’ with clarity and honesty. She expresses her sense of this, and the feelings and thoughts that characterized it, in her paintings, which are very much created through an awareness of the moment in which she is working.
Her chosen vehicle for the expression of these emotions is abstraction, and she says that she has been particularly influenced by the early Abstract Expressionists, notably Diebenkorn, Hofmann and Joan Mitchell. She feels that abstraction provides her with the freedom she needs to paint how she feels – and this freedom certainly translates itself to the viewers of her paintings which contain all the sense of liberation usually associated only with childhood memories.
The work of Ruth Gilmore Langs invites us into her world and introduces us to themes that characterize her life. We are privileged to enter into the process through which she heals and defines herself, and can join her as she develops her own, personal voice.
The exhibition is being held in Agora Gallery’s new gallery exhibition space – the very first show to be put on there. For those of you who are familiar with the gallery already, the new venue is right next door to the space you already know, putting it, too, in the heart of the Chelsea art district. Directions for how to get there can be found here.
