Using artisans – skilled workers – to aid in the process of creating art has been a common practice in the artist community for centuries. Michelangelo, as is well known, had a large group of artisans working for him who helped him complete the projects that came out of his studio, and many other famous artists also relied heavily on the use of assistants. In more modern times, Andy Warhol’s Factory churned out numerous artworks, many of which had relatively little direct input from the artist. Contemporary artists such as Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst have publicly discussed their own studios, in which a number of assistants work under the direction of the main artist to create the works that sometimes sell at auction for millions of dollars.

Three fabulous exhibitions are coming to Agora Gallery this February. The shows will open on February 10, 2012 and continue until March 1, 2012. The opening reception will be on February 16, 2012 and as always art enthusiasts are warmly encouraged to attend, meet some of the artists, and enjoy the atmosphere and the works.
The Substance of Abstraction is full of visual verve and energy, giving the viewer the impression that the walls of the gallery have come to life and are engaging with their audience. Lively and skilfully created, these works both show and validate the care and technique which has been invested in their creation. Exploring every facet of our awareness, the artists bravely strike out for ground that is too often avoided, resulting in compelling artworks.

The annual Chelsea International Fine Art Competition is just around the corner, due to start accepting entries on February 7, 2012. That’s less than a week! That being so, now seems like a good time to review some of the important things to bear in mind when entering a competition. A lot of these points may appear obvious, but often the nerves or excitement of entering can put these things out of an artist’s mind. Remember to stay calm and do your best.
1) Fill in all the details. Yes, this sounds absurd – but you’d be amazed how many artists leave out crucial information such as contact details or the medium of the work they have submitted. Fill in the forms provided carefully, and go back over [...]

As we begin to feel that the new year really has started, it seems like a good time to answer one of those questions that so often gets asked by visitors to the gallery and in curious emails. It might even be something that you’ve asked yourself. The question is ‘What’s it like, working in the gallery?’
In many ways this is hard to answer precisely. It varies from person to person, and from day to day. Installation days, for example, are unlike any others – in fact they deserve a separate post all to themselves! – but even more ordinary days can be full of surprises. The gallery may look pristine, calm and relaxed – but that doesn’t mean that the people working in it aren’t frantically busy sometimes. Every [...]
